More than a destination
AltruVistas’ founder Malia Everette was born and raised on Oahu. In 2014, she established a dedicated Honolulu office, and since then, we’ve been expanding our inbound Hawai‘i programs. Malia returned back home in 2020 to create a homestead on Hawai‘i Island and set down sustainable roots.
AltruVistas’ intention is pono: To create travel and learning experiences that counter the extractive commercial Hawai‘i tourism that often adversely affects Kanaka (indigenous Hawai‘ians). We curate our Hawai‘i journeys—whether for partner organizations, school groups, individuals, or families—so that they support Aloha 'āina: the land and the people who are its stewards.
When you journey with respect to Hawai‘i with us, you are received into our ohana. You’ll engage relationally with community representatives and learn about cultural survivance, Hawai’ian history and storytelling, environmental conservation, food sovereignty, and community and individual healing. Traveling to Hawai‘i with us means 50-80% of your journey cost goes directly into island-local economies, and towards projects and initiatives that support the Hawai‘ian people.

Oceania
In Polynesia, we’re unified, not divided, by the ocean. AltruVistas Oceania journeys include Maori healing and conservation journeys in Aotearoa (New Zealand); marine conservation expeditions in Fiji; cultural exchanges in Samoa; and high school service learning journeys in Tahiti. All our Oceania cultural immersions share common threads in regard to Polynesian ancestral and contemporary wayfaring, canoe journeys, and star-mapping; as well as explorations into canoe plants and the 'āina which feeds us.
In 2025, AltruVistas brought on Tiare Mataoa as our Operations and Oceania Director. Born in Tahiti and now living in Hawaiʻi, Tiare is passionate about helping travelers engage consciously and respectfully within native lands that have experienced colonization. She believes in travel as a tool for mutual understanding that centers on local voices, supports community-led initiatives, and fosters meaningful cultural exchange.
